In August 1985, the Animal Rescue Mission (ARM) was founded by a group of people who were united in their concern for the welfare of animals, and the belief that they could make a difference to better the lives of animals in the Alamogordo area. On October 25, 1985 the Animal Rescue Mission was incorporated as a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.

Over the years, the Animal Rescue Mission has rescued and helped well over 5,000 cats and dogs. Thanks to the efforts of Animal Rescue Mission - and our volunteers, donors and sponsors - many animals that were injured, in distress, or in danger of being euthanized, were provided with necessary medical care and adopted into caring homes.

In the 27 years that ARM has been active in the Otero County area and beyond, the organization has funded several thousand spay and neuter surgeries for pets whose owners who could not afford the cost of this surgery.

Five acres of land located on the outskirts of Alamogordo was donated to ARM in Oct 2003. Shortly thereafter, ARM broke ground  and construction of a 1,500 sq. ft. building has been completed, which contains indoor/outdoor kennels, a grooming station and equipment, staff office, and other facilities. Extensive, secure fenced walk yards and exercise areas have also been built.  At this time ARM is working to establish the best possible use for this property for the benefit of the animals in Otero County.

ARM is also working on many other programs to benefit the animals and people in our area. Please continue to check this website for updated information on our low-cost spay/neuter clinic and other community service programs.

ARM is run by volunteers. If you would like to find out more about how you can put your knowledge and skills to work for ARM and hor make a donation to help the animals, please contact Jean Schaeffer at (575) 443-1613.
